Suncoast Home Watch offers regular engine run inspections for vehicles left at Southwest Florida vacation properties — starting the vehicle, running it to operating temperature, and checking fluid levels, tire pressure, and battery condition on each visit.

The engine run inspection is included on a scheduled basis alongside your regular home watch inspections. Each visit is documented and included in your property report.

What Extended Storage Does to a Vehicle

A vehicle parked for five to six months in Southwest Florida’s heat and humidity faces a specific set of storage risks:

  • Battery discharge — Most car batteries will not hold a charge for more than 4–8 weeks without the vehicle being run. A discharged battery left for months can sulfate and fail entirely.
  • Fuel system degradation — Gasoline begins to degrade within 30–90 days. Ethanol-blended fuels absorb moisture and can cause fuel system corrosion and injector issues.
  • Brake rotor surface rust — Brake rotors exposed to Florida humidity develop surface rust quickly. While this is often cosmetic and clears with use, it can indicate more serious corrosion if left unchecked.
  • Tire flat-spotting — Tires sitting under the weight of a stationary vehicle for months can develop flat spots, particularly in heat.
  • Seal drying — Rubber seals and gaskets dry out more quickly in high heat, which can lead to small leaks that develop after the vehicle is returned to use.

A regular engine run — starting the vehicle, running it to operating temperature, and driving it briefly if possible — prevents or significantly reduces all of these issues.

Extended storage is the single most damaging thing for a vehicle. Regular engine runs prevent the most common problems that develop when a vehicle sits idle.

Engine Start & Warm-Up

  • Vehicle started and run to full operating temperature

Battery Condition

Battery discharge is the most common problem in stored vehicles. Battery voltage is checked on every visit — chronic low voltage is flagged before it becomes a dead battery that requires a service call.

Tyre Pressure

All four tyres checked and inflated to manufacturer specification. Flat spots develop quickly in stored vehicles — maintained pressure prevents permanent sidewall distortion.

Visual Walk-Around & Report

Exterior condition, tyre sidewalls, visible fluid leaks, and any changes since the last visit documented with photographs. Vehicle condition included in your regular property report.

Engine run inspections are scheduled to coincide with your regular home watch visits — bi-weekly on the Silver Plan or weekly on the Gold Plan. Running the engine at least once every two weeks is generally sufficient to prevent battery discharge and keep fuel systems and seals in good condition during a typical six-month storage period. If your vehicle has a particularly sensitive battery, an older battery, or a known tendency to drain during storage, we can discuss a more frequent schedule.
During each engine run visit, we start the vehicle, allow it to reach operating temperature, check battery condition and warning lights, verify fluid levels including oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid, check tire pressure on all four tires, and inspect the exterior for any visible damage, vandalism, or pest activity. The vehicle is run for a sufficient duration to properly cycle the engine oil and charge the battery. All findings are documented and included in your property report.
If we identify a concern during the engine run inspection — a warning light, a low fluid level, an unusual noise, a flat or low tire — we notify you immediately with a description and photographs. For issues that can be addressed simply, such as adding washer fluid or inflating a tire, we handle it on the spot and note it in your report. For issues requiring mechanical attention, we coordinate with our licensed local mechanic network the same way we handle property repairs — obtaining a quote, presenting it for your approval, and managing the work through completion.

Our standard engine run inspection service covers passenger vehicles — cars, trucks, and SUVs. For motorcycles, we can discuss a modified inspection protocol on a case-by-case basis.
